Chapter 6: Analyzing Students' Multimodal Texts: The Product and the Process

1. Why do educators need to be careful about terms like "Digital Native"?

Educators 9need to be carefull when using the term Digital Native because there is so many varying degrees of "Digital Natives". There are so many degrees because not everyone has the same exposure to technology.

2. What outcome occurs when young people are encourage to transform their understanding of particular topics by designing a multimodal text?

When students are encourageed to transform their understanding of particular subjects to a multimodal text there is always a positive outcome.

4. What was the goal of the project in terms of product?

The goal was to track the development of the participants multimodal literacies over a two year period, and comparing the first and the last products made.

5. What was the goal of the project in terms of process?

The goal was to gain a deeper understanding of how multimodal texts were created, specifically when the students were working at computers in pairs.

6. How were the participants for the study selected?

The students who were selscted all studied the subject of Study of Society and the Environment (SOSE).

7. Describe the task students engage is for the purpose of this study?

The students created two websites.

8. Explain how the researchers compared the student created multimodal texts?

Which students worked collaboratively in pairs, had fully completed the task, and the video screen data recordings were intact and complete.

9. What differences in Jenny's PowerPoint presentation do you find the most interesting?

10. How is working together on a computer unlike working together using a pencil and paper?

Working with a computer in pairs differs from using pencil and paper because you can do so much more on a computer and do things faster.

11. What was interesting about student's behavior as they collaborated on a task at the computer?

They all had different ideas when it came to what was a priority.

12. What can teacher learn about designing learning activities that involve the creation of multimodal texts from this study?

13. According the the conclusion of this study, what do student need to learn in order to successful complete a multimodal text construction?

Students need to develop their reflective and evaluation processes in relation to a task. Also they need to have traditional skills for sucessful task completion.

14. Are you surprised by the conclusions drawn in this study?

No because there is such a broad generalization for Digital Natives, and even though this was a study and the students only had an alloted amount of time some still didn't finish when they were supposed to. I think this is because of otrher factors in the students lives.

Double journal Entry #7

1.       Choose one of the unprecedented stresses on the earth resources and describe how it will negatively affect the quality of life of people living in developing countries and people living in modernized countries.

   One of the unprecedented stresses I worry most about is the scarcity of water. I worry because it only takes three days without water and the human body starts to shut down and you die. If water gets to the point of there not being enough it will have to be rationed. It will negatively affect both developing countries and modernized countries in the same way because whoever has the most power or money in the country will receive the water first. Then if they run out on the way down the “ladder” then you’re just SOL.

 

2.       What is the major debate around the future of market-based economies?

  The major debate is how to balance out there market-oriented economies, and while this debate is going on there is also no thought into doing a wholesale and returning to central planning or even to state enterprise.

 

 

3.       How has this technological revolution different the previous technological revolutions and what two factors of production and now more important than capital, labor and raw materials?

  This technological revolution is centered on low-cost telecommunications and information technologies, which has caused many side revolutions. In today’s revolution is mostly about the transformation of time and distance, which is much more important than capital, labor, and raw materials.  

 

4.       What new service ideas have you had direct experience with? Drawing on your personal experience what are the benefits and drawbacks of these new service ideas?

  I have had direct experience with information services. The benefits to these are you can find out whatever you like whenever you like, but the drawback is sometimes when you are ,for example, calling to get help with your computer they make you talk to a computer animated voice that only understands yes or no.

Response:

I chose this quote because this concerns me. China is coming up the ranks because only the brightest children are allowed to go on and have more education and that is why there “averages” are so high. Also because when their children are in school they there far longer than American students. With that many bright young adults coming into the work force and helping develop new technologies it is no wonder that China will be the world’s largest economy.  

Seven Power Lens on 21st Century Literacy

1) What is semiotics?
     Semiotics is the study of how the reading of signs and symbols together communicate complicated ideas in the form of codes. For example in the reading it talks about President Clinton wearing his "usual dark suit with a stylish blue shirt and red tie" fro American readers this is perceived as patriotism. 
2) How can teachers capitalize on students preferred literacy behaviors?
By understanding students preferred literacy behaviors we, as teachers, can use that to our advantage while teaching the students what they need to know.
3) According to this article why is it important for students to learn to analyze the news media? 

If students do not learn to interpret the media they could miss out of something being said in between the lines. 

4) Copy and Paste a West Virginia CSO that a photo analysis activity might address in a content area.

using a real-world problem solving investigation, create and interpret data using various methods of displaying circle graphs, histograms, and frequency curves, make predictions, include information concerning  outliers, present and justify results.

Response:

I chose this quote because with information literacy we can learn about anything. In the article they Google the reporter, and the research Theodore Roosevelt. Because we have Google, Bing, and Wikipedia we can just search what we want to know and bam there it is.    With all this knowledge at the tips of our fingers we need to know how to interpret it. that is why using information literacy is so important.

1.Technoevangelists are advocates of something therefor I am not an advocate of technoskeptics.

2.Because digital native has such a broad time span and technology changes so much how is to say who are that digital natives.

Digital natives are working in your organization today. They are solving business problems, building social network, and creating new processes, with or without your help or support.

Response:

I chose this quote because I completely agree. We, digital natives, are out there helping everyone including “technophobes” and “technoskeptics”. Because of the technology out there today we have new and easier ways of accessing information and using it to the best of our abilities. We use defined processes but are constantly creating new ones of our own, and there is resistance and negative feedback. The current generation is reinventing the workplace and society. The technophobes and skeptics need to embrace that the flow of knowledge goes both ways. If not some will be left behind.
