Response:
I chose this
quote because think that he is right. Today’s youths are creating their own
kind of literacy with their own rules. I think that we are doing a good job of
it to because of all the controversy of it. Which with all things new there is
a fight for people to accept change. Not that long ago women were expected to
wear dresses all the time and not allowed to vote. When these changes accord there
was controversy and I do not expect any less now. Just like with Wikipedia, it
is a new kind of technology that they do not fully understand, and there is big
controversy. In the article Jenkins talks about the negative review of it because
of one mistaken fact. Yes, there are more mistakes, but with anything that you
read there could be misinformation given. What teachers should do when their
students use Wikipedia and find mistaken facts is contact the administrators
and have the mistake fixed. Also if they are so worried about the students not
having enough “skepticism” warn them, but still let them have the experience of
using it. And have them compare the information they find on the site to other
sources. Instead of banning Wikipedia from researchable use and give it a bad
reputation.
