Quote:

Digital natives are working in your organization today. They are solving business problems, building social network, and creating new processes, with or without your help or support.

Response:

I chose this quote because I completely agree. We, digital natives, are out there helping everyone including “technophobes” and “technoskeptics”. Because of the technology out there today we have new and easier ways of accessing information and using it to the best of our abilities. We use defined processes but are constantly creating new ones of our own, and there is resistance and negative feedback. The current generation is reinventing the workplace and society. The technophobes and skeptics need to embrace that the flow of knowledge goes both ways. If not some will be left behind.

Double Journal Entry #4

Quote:

“Today’s digital youth are in the process of creating a new kind of literacy.”

“Many educators express concern about young people’s increased reliance on Wikipedia as a resource for their homework assignments and research projects.”

“These teachers worry that youth aren’t developing an appropriate level of skepticism about the kinds of information found on this particular site.”

Response:

I chose this quote because think that he is right. Today’s youths are creating their own kind of literacy with their own rules. I think that we are doing a good job of it to because of all the controversy of it. Which with all things new there is a fight for people to accept change. Not that long ago women were expected to wear dresses all the time and not allowed to vote. When these changes accord there was controversy and I do not expect any less now. Just like with Wikipedia, it is a new kind of technology that they do not fully understand, and there is big controversy. In the article Jenkins talks about the negative review of it because of one mistaken fact. Yes, there are more mistakes, but with anything that you read there could be misinformation given. What teachers should do when their students use Wikipedia and find mistaken facts is contact the administrators and have the mistake fixed. Also if they are so worried about the students not having enough “skepticism” warn them, but still let them have the experience of using it. And have them compare the information they find on the site to other sources. Instead of banning Wikipedia from researchable use and give it a bad reputation.

My view point on learning styles is conflicted because I think that people learn in different ways but at the same time we can’t categorize them. While watching the video I thought about how I learn and, for example, how I thought about a German Shepard’s ear I thought a picture of a German Shepard’s ear. I believe that certain things you have to learn visually, audibly, or kinesthetically because students need all of these in one way or the other. For example visually, students need to see the shape of a circle to know what it is, and audibly we need to hear the sound of a guitar to know what it sounds like. Lastly, we need to touch velvet and silk to know what they feel like. That sounds simplistic but it is because those are all things that we learn over the course of our lives.

Quote:

“According to BBC News many educators do not use video games in learning. They think this kind of technology is only for fun and does not benefit their children.”

Response:

I chose this quote because from my experience I have only encountered computers and smart boards in classrooms. I think that by refusing to use other technology in the classroom educators are limiting student’s learning. Today, kids are more interested in using their IPods and cellphones than old fashioned copying notes from the chalkboard. I think that if students could bring their computers, IPods, IPads, and cell phones to school then educators could use them to their advantage. I don’t mean using them every day because it will take a while to figure out a good way to use these items without misuse, but I am sure that it can be done.

Double Entry Journal #2

Quote:

“Young people commonly check up on their friends' activities by viewing their online photo albums or status reports, obviating the need for a phone call or e-mail, much less a face-to-face visit. One popular move is to post a Happy Birthday greeting on the Wall (a semi-public message board) of a friend's Facebook page without making real personal contact.”

“People exercise control in the way they design their pages: Staged photographs, exaggerated profiles, and padded friends lists enable online users to manipulate how others see them.”

Response:

I chose these quotes because I felt he was saying that we purposely avoid face-to-face or more personal contact, and also was stereotyping young people’s online profiles. I disagree with the avoiding contact because in this day in age everyone is constantly on the move and has a busy schedule. For instance, I have classes all day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays so I don’t have time to call my cousin in Canada to tell her Happy Birthday. It is much easier for both of us if I just write on her Facebook wall, and when she has time to comment back, she will. I feel that writing on someone’s wall is the same as an email only that everyone we are friends with can see it. As for some profiles they are staged and exaggerated, but others are not. Some people may want the online world to see them differently than they actually are, but I feel that your online profile should be an extension of yourself. After all, people get on social networking sites to communicate with one another. Why not be real?
